It's no secret that Downline Partners and constant promotion are the most productive ways to make high volumes of MLM sales.

The way to make promotions work well and explode your income is to increase the number of promotions at an exponential rate.

Traditionally, Downline Partners are the most common link between the MLM product and customers. The people who created the product don't sell it themselves. They get other people to sell the product for them, and they keep the "lion's share" of the profits.

But that needn't be the case. You can rely on the Internet as a way to bring in MLM profits without giving the cream to your labor to your MLM Upline Sponsors.

You can get the benefits of your MLM Downline associates efforts by giving your MLM Downline more of the "action," i.e., more incentive to work for you.

You don't Even Need a Product of your Own

"Strange," you say. "I thought that you want to build a business by selling MLM products to customers.

Well, what you really want to build is a business.

Are you a frustrated MLM Professional?

Perhaps the sales of the product that you agreed to be a Downline Associate for do not live up to the glowing expectations that were described to you by your Upline Sponsor.

What a surprise!

Seriously, you really didn't think that the market was as big, or as "hot" as your Upline Sponsor claimed, did you?

But, this is your own fault. You failed to perform due diligence.

Before you invested your time and your money, you needed to determine:

What is the best selling MLM items?

What items are getting the most interest by consumers?

What items are getting the highest number of searches on the Internet?

How do I find prospects for these items?

What are the most popular selling items in our product line?

Where do I advertise to find new prospects and customers?

What words should I put in my auction title?

Why Starting A Traditional MLM Business is a Really Bad Idea

1.) Traditional MLM Business strategies require too much work setting up before the profit starts.

One of the biggest reasons why hard working people don't get their MLM Businesses going in the first place is because there is a lot of work that goes into the initial prospecting and recruiting.

When you factor in the time for the phone calls and restaurant meetings, providing training and attending the hotel ballroom motivational meetings (to say nothing about the cost), starting an MLM Business doesn't pay.

All of this non-paying work (You are not being paid for doing any of this work. You only get paid for sales.) is just too time-consuming for the average job-holding person to invest in while still holding a job to pay the bills.

2.) Traditional MLM Business strategies have built-in pressure to sell to your family and friends because these are the only sales that you can make until you really learn how to sell.

It is easy to burn out by spending so much time building your MLM Business (without making any money). You begin to think that you are never going to make a dime, you imagine that your family will laugh at you for failing, and you begin to fixate on making money (instead of focusing on caring for your customers and your Downline associates.

The demand of spending three to five hours every night (away from your family) prospecting and recruiting takes its toll. Couple that with the demand to make the MLM Business pay off, and you have "stress up the kazoo." Continuing with this prospecting and meeting schedule for long periods of time requires a stamina and determination that few people possess when the process is paying off, let alone during startup when the investment hasn't started yielding fruit.

3.) MLM Business strategies require pricey and long-term advertising. You have to purchase glitzy magazines, overpriced catalogs, Websites, give-a-way CDs and DVDs, and assorted sample products.

Then there are the huge cell phone bills because three and four-way calling eats up your minutes two or three times as fast as a normal call.

You also have to keep up appearances that you are a successful MLM professional. How can you recruit and sell if you look as impoverished and desperate as you really are? "Faking it 'till you make it" may work, but acting affluent requires that you spend like a drunken sailor.

4.) MLM Business strategies demand a large investment of sales training. You have to learn to change your habits of speech and gesture. You have to learn to rephrase questions to develop the "yes set." You have to read your customer's objections, and counter their "just say No" mind set before they even raise the issues that indicate that you are advocating a "bum investment."

Then you have to moderate, troubleshoot and fix a variety of problems that develop with lost or botched orders, claims that product shipments didn't arrive on time, and other tasks that somehow got left out of description of what you were getting yourself in for when you were recruited. (Let's hope that you don't do the same to your Downline associates.)

The truth is that MLM Business strategies require a large investment in training, both your training, and the training that you provide (free of charge) to your Downline associates.

5.) MLM Businesses also require that you continually battle to keep your customers and Downline associates. Folks are quick to drop out when they find out how much work they have to put into the MLM Business before they see a payoff (if they ever do), and there are a lot of competitive pressures enticing them to "jump ship" and join another business (where the sponsors promise better, even magic, returns than the program you offer provides).

What most Upline Sponsors fail to reveal is that the "average" Downline associate and customer will stay active for 3-4 months before they cancel. So, while your Upline Sponsor showed you "What If" profit numbers based upon a steady pyramid of growth, the reality is that "pyramid" looks less exponential and more like a slow incline...with you having to battle to keep the profit slope positive.

Fall down on the job, and your profit slope takes a downhill turn. This means working even harder than you already are just to keep the progress that you have made, and the prospect is that profits will only diminish.

These MLM Business profit prospects are probably only going to get worse as more competitors join the fray, and as your market area becomes saturated.

And, if the numbers that your Upline Sponsors gave you were true, your big city market could reach product saturation (Downline Associates and Customers) in an amazingly short time, and that is if MLM Downline Associates and Customers hung around.

MLM Downline Associates and Customers simply don't have the time nor money to remain active members in many different programs, including yours. Issues include indifference, a lack of effort, poor results and a never ending amount of other enticing offers, and little payoff for a lot of work. You are lucky to get MLM Downline Associates and Customers to stay with your business for three or four months.

But an MLM Business can be profitable, but, there is a right way to run your business...and a wrong way. Unfortunately, the way that your Upline Sponsor told you is the "right way" for the Upline Sponsor to earn fast cash, and the "wrong way" for you to build a long-term business.

While the process of building a profitable MLM business is simple (you follow accepted business procedures, measure your investments and profits, and follow a business plan), rushing headlong into the business the way your Upline Sponsor tells you is "surefire failure."

What are the things that your Upline Sponsor tells you that are wrong?

Here are the major misleading pieces of advice...

Sell to your family and friends first to "get your feet wet"

Don't sell to your family and friends at all
Your product isn't that good
Your product is overpriced
Less expensive competing products are available at your local hardware or supermarket

Spring for large quantities of the company-produced brochures and catalogs

These company-printed materials are often glitzy and over priced
The purpose of the glitz is to show that the product is "upscale" and worth inflated the price
Brochures and catalogs do not sell products, salespeople do
You are asked to invest in non-productive materials that add little or nothing to your bottom line
Purchase a large quantity of these materials to "get the volume discount" and you can put your MLM Business into a hole that you can never climb out of

Attend high-priced motivational seminars at fancy hotels

This is great if you want to deduct 20% of the cost of the program from your taxes and 100% of the cost from your bottom line
Listen to pep talks that try and convince you that your success comes from believing in yourself and the "Law of Attraction" instead of focusing upon sound business principles and professional business planning

Invest now in building your Downline for future riches

You cannot help your Downline Associates until you are successful yourself

How to Tell a Legitimate MLM Opportunity from the Rest...

MLM can be a huge business success, or a gross, time and money-intensive flop. The results depend upon you, and upon your building the opportunity into a business.

MLM products have been around for years, but the performance of agents and associates remains about the same; i.e., only three percent of the people who join make any money.

But remember two things about this statistic:

You have to work harder, better, smarter than the other 97% to make MLM opportunities pay off
The folks that you attract into your Downline will include 97 out of 100 or the folks that don't make a dime

For those who believe that MLM is a "Cash Cow Lusting to be Milked, look at these statistic another way.

This is equivalent to a farmer raising 100 cows, and only three of them giving any milk...like a farmer raising 100 chickens, but only three of them laying eggs!

What if the farmer must plant 100 seeds for each plants that sprout? Can the farmer stay in business?

Think of your efforts as planting seeds. Your recruiting time, your money, your training of associates, your guidance and coaching…

But, a MLM business has to be a cost-efficient and a measurable strategy for delivering long-tern profit. MLM businesses have to provide a payback in income for their owners.

Prospects become interested to MLM every day, and most want to make quick money from the outset. But most arrivals on the MLM business scene do not fully understand the MLM business, and they make costly mistakes. Why do you only make pennies from each sale when the product that you pitch is overpriced?

The reason for that sad and sorry state of affairs is that your Upline sponsors each siphon off the money. The "Top Dog" a "lion's share," the Next in line gets a "tiger's share," the next a "hyena's share," and so on until the scraps left give you a maggot's share.

This is the reason that so many MLM products are over priced.

There is another issue linked to MLM business activity. That issue is advertising, and advertising is a central function of a MLM business operation. While advertising is important in marketing, the sale of advertising materials to Downline associates is another profit stream for many MLM companies.

While advertising is important, requiring MLM Downline to purchase brochures, CDs, DVDs, catalogs and motivational magazines is an additional burden that keeps some Downline associates from every launching their businesses.

The fact is that some MLM companies would not make any money at all for their founders if they didn't charge exorbitant prices for the promotional materials that they sell to their associates.

If the company that you are evaluating before joining (while you are conducting your due diligence investigations) charges for slick materials, stand clear. Besides, commissions for the purchase of these "advertising" materials often only goes to the founders of the company, and you, as a "come lately" associate receive no credit for the purchases of advertising materials from your Downline associates.

In reality, the company should provide these materials at cost, or subsidize the creation of those materials. It would be easy to provide all the artwork and creative files necessary for printing these materials, and allow Downline associates to produce them locally.

Even better, an Upline sponsor could pool the printing and creation of advertising materials, customize the materials for the local market, and share the production costs among many business centers. In this way, local contact numbers would be "directly printed" in the advertising materials, instead of being pasted in with a mailing label.

A model for providing all the creative materials that Downline associates need is found in the Internet Marketing arena.

MLM Business Smarts: How to Evaluate a MLM Company

MLM companies are a "dime-a-dozen." And many offer a quality business opportunity.

However, it is your job to figure out which of these "opportunities" is "for real," and which of these companies will leave your bank account "reeling."

Note; This is not the reeling as in "pulling in a big fish," but the reeling as in "a spinning dance that leaves you dizzy."

Here are some tips, compliments of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will not tell you whether a particular MLM opportunity is legal or illegal. That is your job and that is something that you should do in your research and due diligence before investing.

However, there some common sense indicators that should set off "red flags," even "warning flares" that can steer you clear of a financial pile up.

Look for these warning signs as you consider your investment decision:

Watch out for any MLM plan that includes commissions for recruiting additional distributors. This may be illegal (a pyramid scheme)

Beware of MLM plans that ask new associates or distributors to purchase expensive inventories. If the product sells like the MLM sponsors claim, large initial inventories should be unnecessary. You should be able to pay as you go, and fund future inventories from sales, i.e., plow your initial profits back into the business

Be careful of MLM plans that promise that you will become rich through continued growth of your Downline. If you believe that you will earn more commissions on sales made by new MLM associates and distributors you recruit, instead of through sales of products you make yourself, you are "betting the farm" on someone else's labor. How do you expect that your Downline folks will have any more luck selling the product than you have unless you train them, and until they build their businesses?

Stay clear of plans that claim to sell "miracle" products or super-high-priced commodities. And watch out for promises of enormous earnings. Check these claims thoroughly. Just because a MLM recruiter makes a claim doesn't make it true! Ask for "hard evidence," or better still, independent evidence.
Beware of shills, i.e., folks who are paid by a MLM recruiter to tell you that they are making money "hand-over fist." The only money that they may be making is the money they get by pretending to be earning money through the scheme

Avoid sign any contracts in a big hotel "motivational" meeting. And, steer clear of any other high-pressure venue. Take your time, analyze the business, and re-think your decision to join. Talk it over with your spouse, a friend…and especially with your accountant and lawyer

Do your due diligence homework! Check with your local Better Business Bureau and you state's Attorney General about any MLM investment that you are considering. These officials can only warn you about complaints and legal cases, so use other information, too

Use these strategies in evaluating any MLM opportunity, especially when claims about the company (and your earning potential) seem "too good to be true."

You know the cliche!

Just perform your due diligence and prevent your bank account from becoming another "road kill" statistic on the MLM road of promises…a highway to the poorhouse.

Do you have what it takes to be a successful MLM Pro?

The truth is that 97% of MLM Wish-Marketers do not make enough money to cover their expenses.

Of course the entry cost (brochures, CDs, magazines, print ads, DVD…as well as actual product) and other hidden costs that are required to maintain your associate status mount up.

But, while most MLM Wish-Marketers earn less than $100 per month, some MLM Pro-Marketers do very well indeed.

The difference lies in the way that the MLM Wish-Marketers and the MLM Pro-Marketers picture the MLM venture. The MLM Wish-Marketers who see MLM as a "get-rich-quick-scheme" are the ones that fail to make money.

The MLM Pro-Marketers see MLM as a "business model."

So, do you have the right attitude and do you have the ability to stay focused. Can you avoid fooling yourself? Can you avoid negative self-talk?

To avoid the "failure option," you must have a business plan, and you must visualize success.

Unless you expect success from your MLM business, you will never experience the joy and delight of success.

You can make money with your MLM business, but success requires work. And, you have a lot to learn.

If you buy into the myth that all you have to do is "pitch" to your family and friends (as some MLM vendors tell you; then you will end up with little or no money to show for your efforts, and few if any remaining friends. (You will still have family, they are stuck with you; but they will cringe when they see you coming.)

The problem with the "family and friends myth" is that they are not a targeted audience. They may care about you (until you pitch them too much), but they have no natural interest in your product line.

Instead, you need to build your knowledge and skills to that you can find a targeted source of prospects. Then, you need to build the knowledge and skills that allow you to convert these prospects into customers and MLM associates.

When you are starting out, you will make lots of mistakes. Are you ready for this "rough spot on the learning curve?"

You just learn from your mistakes, keep perfecting your skills and techniques, keep learning.

Of course, you should minimize your mistakes by following a proven system for success.

Find someone with the expertise that is willing to teach you.

And, expect your learning process to take time.

The list of knowledge and skills that you need to transform from a MLM Wish-Marketer to a MLM Pro-Marketer is long…and the learning is subtle.

Little nuances of differences make wide and deep differences in results.

Focus upon results, measure your progress (both in personal improvement and in monetary outcome, i.e., the money you make.).

You are motivated. You can learn. So don't give up just because your Upline sponsor fed you hype and myth instead of the business reality.

Turn the corner, and focus your efforts the way that an entrepreneur does, and you will make money in the long run from your MLM business.

What is more important is looking for a career, not eat your cake now, but "butter your bread for years to come."

The question is, "Will you run your MLM endeavor as you would a day at the race track, or like you would a real business?/

Real Investment

If you are going to invest your time, and money, the opportunity had better provide outcomes that exceed what you could make on your current job once you placed some of your earnings into a tax-free annuity.

It makes no sense to invest "sweat equity" and "hard-earned, after-tax dollars" and get back less than you put in.

Overall profit and Return on Investment (ROI) is the correct measure of the business-like focus of getting into an MLM business.

Are you Building a Business?

The MLM folks like to say that you have a business, that there are so many people (head count) in their organization, but, where is their written business plan?

Entrepreneurs get things done, but they make a lot of mistakes when they operate on "gut feelings." They are easy prey for MLM schemes, and must perform their "due diligence" before entering into any MLM business.

Professionals will study and analyze and plan effectively. However, unless they are people people, they will not do well in any MLM system that requires lots of contact with customers.

Sales people are like hunters, and the "thrill of the chase" excites them. The mistake that sales people make is that in getting the sale, they might fail to build the long-term relationship that is required. All great sales people focus on the relationship first, service or serviceability fit of their product to the customer/ client's needs, and gradually selling more pr, more expensive products and services in the future. This is a career if relationships, rather than quick sales are the goal.

Marketers focus upon matching a product to the most people of a particular category, then writing sales copy that motivates people to buy. Marketers are at a disadvantage in the MLM field because they are hampered by the latitude that they can operate in. Of course, great marketers will figure a way to put together an irresistible offer despite the MLM company's framework.

But, marketers may shy away from MLM companies because they research the market first. The "deal killers" for a marketer are:

Choosing a product only after determining

Setting the correct price point. Most MLM products are over priced to carry the overhead of the upline, so market research will show

Marketers are convinced of their own abilities, and would never put their career in the hands of downlines and associates. Too many slackers, not knowing what they are doing to bring in the return on investment for the training

Training the downline doesn't pay, after training their is nothing to keep the associate from "jumping ship"i.e., affiliating with another MLM company, or a competitor, and taking their "organization" with them.

Marketers look for under developed and under exploited products, and they look for buy out or licensing agreements. For example, they may want to change the title of a book. Bundle the products, provide a sales funnel of upsell and back end products, etc.

Unless they are starting the MLM company, marketers may find that participation in an MLM company hampers and stagnates their career

People people may get excited about the MLM propaganda as they join, but if they truly care about others, they will quickly begging to doubt that selling over priced products to people, and bringing in independent associates who don't stand a chance of ever breaking even, let alone making a profit is just something that "bothers their conscience." Sadness and disillusionment are career limiting situations for the people person.

Managers operate well in an MLM environment because they are able to organize and structure their activities. They are also able to delegate work, although this skill doesn't serve much purpose until they have a downline that has been trained.

Teachers operate well in an MLM environment as long as they can training downline associates. Of course, they have to have a training mentor for themselves (a rare occurrence) or, it takes years for them to acquire the skills. The caring about others that teachers feel serves them well, unless they are working for a pyramid scheme company that just churns out new (soon to be broke) associates to keep the "money-grubbing apparatus" oiled for the higher-up company partners.

Political-type Organizers, hype, pitch people. These are the hotel ballroom megalomaniacs that revel in a crowd. They do well in MLM because they have no conscience and will say anything to anyone, promise a moon shot when the MLM product can barely reach the balcony of the second floor, and twist psychology so that people are lead to believe that their failures are just because they don't have the right success attitude.

You have to have money to make money, and you have to deliver more value to the person than you take front them in money.

Tricking people means that you have converted a potential lifetime customer into a one-time customer that "bad mouth's you and your MLM company's product to everyone. Unfortunately, MLM folks encounter turned off customers at every turn that were "worked over" by con artists. These folks ruin the career potential for everyone.

The "get rich by tomorrow"crowd are quickly disillusioned, and quickly jump to the next offer, never building their downline. They don't stay with a company long enough to build a career.

The Capital-challenged people don't have the money to make the initial investment, or the luxury to put in the long "apprentice program" that is require to learn the ropes. The capital-challenges people must either have a backer that can help them buy in to the high entry costs, the purchase of products at above retail instead of wholesale, and the mandatory purchase of some companies that is required in order to receive a commission. Entry into an MLM is not a venture for the "weak of wallet."

Homeless street people cannot afford the high entry price of most MLM systems, and they cannot point to their success to show prospects that the system is lucrative.

So how does a MLM Career Stack Up

College students change their major an average of 3.x times before graduating. After that, they change jobs and careers plenty of times, too.

Multi-Level Marketing is not for everyone. It probably isn't for 18 to 22 year olds since they would seem to lack credibility in some product areas. Although a few young people have made a lot of money on Internet multi-level marketing.

How can you Benefit from a Career in MLM?

If the folks who sponsored you will actually train you, you can benefit from the MLM experience because you will learn vital skills that are needed for running and managing any business. These include planning and management skills, sales skills and communication skills. These skills make you valuable to any organization.

With the right training and a legitimate company, you can earn a substantial income, invest in your retirement with Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) (don't buy the foolishness that your independent associate status is equity, it isn't).

Career Path for You, or Not?

The hype from the Multi-Level Marketing marking folks is that you can work as little or as much as you choose.

This is true. However, the reality is that if you want to earn a lot, you will have to work a lot, particularly at first, when you are learning and making lots of mistakes.

Each mistake is a learning opportunity, but it is also lost revenue or a lost revenue stream.

You will find that to make MLM a career, you will have to put in as many or more hours as you would work as a salaried worker in a major corporation, i.e., 40 to 60 hours per week. And, you will work nights, weekends and holidays.

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) and its promise of "get rich quick" seems to bring out the worst in people.

Over priced products, promises of quality that doesn't reveal itself in the testing lab, and the "make a killing and bail to a new company" pattern of these companies' organizers keeps public skepticism on "red alert."

But, there are a lot of people who make honest livings with reputable companies in the MultiLevel Marketing field.

Here are the ways to tell these good companies from the bad. i.e., most of the companies.

MLMs, a Legal Pyramid Scheme?

Some critics would have us do away with all MLMs.

But, this is silly.

And, we can't put all MLM company organizers in jail just because they get rich off the gullibility of highly motivated, but naive folks that want to invest in their own future.

In deciding what MLM to invest your time and money and more time and more money in, here are some guidelines.

Study the company before you get involved with them, and don't trust the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

With MLM scams, most folks that have been "fleeded" are too em-bare-assed to report the company
There is powerful protection in making people look stupid
Besides, it takes weeks or months before the BBB gets another report
In the meanwhile, unscrupulous operator have moved to another operation

Pay attention to your intuition and to your conscience

If you suspect anything at all, look for another opportunity, there are plenty available

If the recriting process is geared up to fire up your greed glands, throw a monkey wrench into the sales machine and run
If you are desparate and need money now, look for gainful employment somewhere else. You will not be thinking clearly
Find out what kind of training program is available and find out the cost

Legitimate companies invest in the training of their sales staff
Disreputable companies make almost as much or more money on their "assocates sales training" than they do on product sales

Check to see if you are required to purchase front loaded products

Front loaded products are mandatory purchases of products that you don't need and can't sell
Reputable companies provide the products for you to sell, and pay a living-wage commision on the sale of those products
If the price that you have to pay for the products is above retail, you know that the offer is a "rip off"

Beware of paying to attend fancy "motivational" gatherings

Ask to talk to successful associates who have been students of the upline guru that is supposed to mentor you

Discover what the training was actually like
Ask to tag along, listen in, be a fly on the wall during a typical day with this person

See if the amount of work that is required by the successful person matches the amount of work that you were told it would take

Some MLM recruiters promise one hour of work a day and $10,000 per month, when the real equation is 100 hours of work per week and $1.00 per month

This will also help you determine if your "mentor" has enough time to train you, or is that person so busy making money for themselves that you are left to fend for yourself (most common scenario)

Check to see if your upline sponsor believes in the "quick buck, make a killing" approach. If so, run!

The quick buck that these money-grubbing, leaches that attach themselves to your wallet make are the bucks that you used to own

Recruiting the Life Blood of MLMs: Translation--"Bleed the Suckers Dry"

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) is driven by recruitment. Products are only an excuse that are used to recruit new distributors.

In some ways, products are irrelevant.

In fact, we have coined the term, "ill-relevant" to describe the negative effects that products have on MLM distributors.

In some ways, it would be cheaper and less of an economic burden if distributors just gave money to the people in their upline, instead of having to buy products.

Stay in the program
Maintain commissions
Continue to qualify for independent distributor status

...are all semi-legal ploys to continue to drain money from the MLM associate.

Recruitment Under False Pretenses

What pushes Multilevel Marketing schemes over the line from being barely legal to being illegal is whether the recruit stands any chance at all of being profitable.

In most cases, unless the recruit gets into the company on the first leg as one of the organizers, or, unless the recruit "jumps ship" from another MLM organization and bring their entire organization; the independent associate must work without ceasing, allow the recruiting process to consume them, and bend the truth.

The Ethics of Full Disclosure

The way that someone who is not on the top rung of the "MLM Pyramid" makes money is by…

Telling the eager crowd of recruits that they will make money, while knowing that over 90% of them will loose money
Selling Promotional materials
Forcing automatic sales of unneeded products by the recruits in order for them to remain eligible for commission payments
Replacing downline associates with new recruits when existing ones drop out

Some critics state that the only way that upline folks can make money is by bending the ethics of full disclosure, and convincing a never ending stream of recruits to join their organization.

The unethical issues crop up when upline folks continue to harvest recruits even after they realize that the market for the products that they are selling is "saturated."

In this case, saturation means a saturation in the number of independent associates that are signed up, past the level where the market can create income for only just so many people.

Legitimate businesses control the number of their sales force so that the earning ability of their representatives is not watered down. Disreputable MLM companies continue to expand the representative base because the money comes, not from new customers, but from the induction fees and front-load product purchases that are required of the new associates.

in this way, the customer (new recruit) is being tricked into thinking that they are sales representatives, when in fact, they are the customers.

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) and Affiliate Marketing share many traits in common.

Here are the similarities…

Both types of marketers:

Cover all their own expenses
Invest in their own training
Expect training from their upline or sponsors, and never get it
Devote their own (uncompensated) time, energy and effort to the task
Jump from one new product or company to another
Grab after "instant riches" instead of building a real business
Come to believe that the problem is "themselves"
Are blind to the real value that they can create

In addition, only a handful of either entry level Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) "independent associates" and folks with entry level Affiliate Marketing skill sets will ever turn a profit…yet alone make a living from these opportunities.

The Reason: Thinking Like a Customer instead of Like an Entrepreneur

You see... the myth of making money fast seduces the common sense of these folks, and they buy into the hype. They are hooked by slick sales pitches that leave them bereft of their own cash.

The riches that they hoped to "hog up" get gobbled up by the higher ups.

In a way, this is like a farm, where the farmer feeds on the pig that it raises. Well, maybe it is more like the farmer milking the cow. The upline raises the downline, i.e., the farmer raises and milks the cow.

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) and Affiliate Marketing hopefuls wish that their "ship would come in." But, real entrepreneurs know that their hard work on high payoff tasks will bring in the bacon.

You need to know what you are doing
You have to be persistent
Every action must be focused on making money
Every expense must be focused on making money
You pick one strategy and focus on it until you finish

You sell to customers, not family and friends

Marketing is different than advertising, and you have to have a testable marketing plan that you follow

Without a solid business foundation, it is next to impossible to earn a living as either an Affiliate Marketer or a MLM Distributor.

So, don't believe the hype that this is easy.

Is Affiliate Marketing the online equivalent of Multi-Level Marketing (ML)?

Here are the similarities, although these seem to go against the grain of current thought.

You see... There so many folks believe that they can make a living online by marketing affiliate products online that they sign up to be affiliates (Independent Distributors?). You see the claims all the time.

Want to Establish a Web MLM?: Beware!

If you want to start a Web Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) because the entry costs are cheap and the pickings are great, beware.

You will be unable to use a PayPal™ account.

PayPal™ does not allow the use of its service with MLM and pyramid schemes.

The reason for this is that PayPal™ has determined that all MLM systems are "illegal."

Paypal™ interprets MLMs to fall under its, "Get Rich Quick" policy.

Of course, people in MLM programs and systems do not believe that they are doing anything illegal.

But, they are expecting to "get rich quickly."

But isn't it the American Dream to get rich?

And, don't the folks that get in on the top of a pyramid scheme get rich?

Well, yes, but at some point other folks, and lots of them, fail to get rich.

The pyramid is supported by a base of payees (the downline) who prop up the rich lifestyle of the pay grabbers (upline).

The key here is to "build an organization." This means collecting enough people (both distributors/ agents, and customers) that contribute their work to the upline's leisure.

The problem here is that the sales-soldiers work a lot and receive little pay, while the sales-generals work a little (or not) and receive a lot of pay.

Working for the hope that you will eventually get a lot of money is OK. People that start their own businesses do that all the time.

The problem starts when the pharaohs look down from their pyramid perch and can see that the market is saturated. What do they do?

The ethical action would be warn everyone that is involved in the organization, halt the enrollment of any new folks, improve the product, cut prices, and increase training and support to the existing sales team. However, the typical response is to continue raking in cash, starting a new business and bringing over anyone with a downline, and launching an exit strategy before the lawsuits and regulators close in.

So, while it is not illegal to "fleece" economic "sheep" by leading them down the hype-rose path to the shearing, PayPal™ frowns upon the practice, and will kill the account of anyone who uses their service in that way.

Whether this policy is fair to Multi-Level Marketers when the government does not label all MLM systems as illegal is the subject for hot debate.

But, PayPal™ made its money in an ethical and legal manner, and can set its own rules.

Skeptical about Online MLM?: After you have been Burned Offline, You have to be...

You don't believe that online Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) holds any more promise than the offline "opportunity" that burned you the last time, do you?

Well, who can blame you?

Your trusting nature...taken advantage of.

Your money

Your hopes and dreams of easy money...dashed on the rocks of a cutthroat reality.

Instead of being easy to sell; those cleaning supplies, that cookware, those vitamins, that high-end knife set, those over-priced skin-care formulations, that marked-up by 40% to 100% gadget...you were left with credit card debt, products you couldn't sell, and no commission on the odd sale that you did launch because you couldn't afford to keep up the monthly purchase requirements.

And, when you stop paying monthly the commissions that you are owed from the work of your down line dry up. This is the case of "fat money" going after "thin money" until you work your way up.

But, the problem isn't that your down line "partners" aren't doing their job, the problem is one of "time to positive cash flow."

In reality, you are the victim of "up line road kill." The people at the top of the MLM Pyramid ride easy street and are "making a killing," while you are on the trod the road to debt.

The problem is that MLM independent associates are really selling product plus overhead. This accounts for the inflated, premium prices that MLM products must carry.

Ordinary prices, normal wholesale, and honest markup that provide a reasonable profit are missing in the MLM model. Instead, the markup migrates "up," with each successive layer above siphoning their "share" of your effort.

This model works "great" until the market hits saturation, then, more work at selling and prospecting leads to diminishing returns.

At this point, the "higher-ups, the president's circle dudes and triple platinum gals" cash out. They abandon the static (or sinking) company, take their down line with them, and move on to a new company where they can pick fresh fruit.

Such a process leaves lots of hurting people in its wake. People that are eager to recoup their losses and restore their dignity and self-worth.

This group makes an ideal market, as long as you actually have a product or system that can help them.

But, this group has been burned once, twice. or more...first, second or third degree MLM burns. They are suspicious, and maybe even bitter.

Your first job is to eliminate all risk, perceived or otherwise. Then, you build their confidence by telling them a story about your own life, one that they can relate to.

Once you gain the trust of this group, avoid high-pressure tactics, instead...

* Pre-sell
* Recommend
* Show other people obtaining benefits

The indirect approach is always superior to full, frontal sales with "MLM-Wars" veterans.

Alleviating pain and suffering makes you a trusted advisor, rather than a sales person.

And, when you are trusted. Never do anything stupid and self-serving like drag them into another MLM scheme.

Lead the only to systems where they actually can make a living.

Ethical MLMs: A new way to Financial Freedom

Multi-Level Marketing schemes (MLMS)abound with the promise to make you a lot of money.

Trouble is, you don't have enough rich friends to sign up, and your family members are always strapped for cash.

In fact, if you tell them how much money you are making on your MLM business, they always seem to get around to asking you if they could borrow some money!

But, what if you could make one of these systems work? What would that be? Would that be a sustainable business?

Here is the simple answer.

You don't make money trying to sell MLM products yourself. No, what you do is help the endless supply of people who are baited, cajoled, seduced…promised the Moon...maybe even promised the stars and the planets…for joining a downline.

Basic marketing is simple:

Find a desperate, rabid crowd that lusts, hungers, thirsts, longs for your product
Find a huge "want" in the members of that crowd
Pander to that want or resolve the biggest "pain" that the crowd members anguish over

With cleaning products, high-end vitamins, exotic berry juices, Internet marketing eBooks; the hunger, thirst, i.e., "lust" is to make money. And, the pain is the problem of building a downline.

The upline sponsor made hard-to fulfill promises, painted bright and sparkling scenarios, touched the "G-string" in the prospect's greed gland and shared the secret treasure map to the "Fountain of Wealth."

But, after salivating by expecting a chauffeur-driven excursion to the savory meal at the Wellspring of Wealth; the prospect finds themselves trudging the Road of Hard Knocks. And, the only "load lightening" that the sponsor offered was the light-touch that excised a substantial "chunk of change" from their bank account or wallet.

And, what remains tattooed upon the psyche and tattered self-esteem of the downline, down-hearted, down-in-the-dumps fleeced dumpling that is your prospect is plenty of pain.

Pain that you can use to your advantage to make plenty of easy money. Money of the kind that the poor chump that you are going to help dreamed of. Easy money. Fulfill your dreams money.

And, you are going to help in an ethical manner…help eliminate the pain and shame from your prospect with the dumpster self-image feels.

Whether they have have a stash of vitamins that will feed a family of 12 for a year, a garage warehouse of cleaning fluids that could sanitize the NYC taxi cab fleet, or enough tropical berry juice to float a boat; they are in over their financial heads.

You could...

help them cut their losses
coach them on how to start and run a real business
refer them to MLMers Anonymous
Help them sell this stuff to other losers

A Better Idea

A better idea, and one that is the subject of this Blog, is to provide resources that help people that were snared in the glittering trap baited with the possibility of riches; i.e., MLM Independent Distributors, to actually make money.

These goals can be modest of grandiose. But, you can help them save face after making a monetary health threatening decision like joining the MLM-de-jour.

Or, you can help them make real money.

The choice is yours, and your conscience will remain "squeaky" clean.

Help them Look on the Bright Side

People that you help don't have to remain shackled to guilt for squandering their savings. Their children can receive a real inheritance, not some equity in a "pyramid-plan" search for the "money-oasis" scheme that has no chance of paying out.

You can show these lost and confused souls the way out of debt, the way to financial freedom. And, your goals do not have to be major and earth shattering. If you can get the "distributor" to call a halt to the $150.00 a month product shipment (you make them $1,800 that would have been lost in unsalable inventory).

Show them how to liquidate and offload the stack of products that they accumulated by selling on eBay™, and show them how to actually recruit people that want to take on the product sales role.

Nobody would mind being a MLM Independent Distributor if it wasn't for the recruiting and endless telephone calls.

The Key

There is only one key to success in the MLM arena. That is, "Make Recruiting Easy." Automate the recruiting, and you have a "do-able" business.

Try to recruit the way that the rich owners of the MLM companies suggest, and you become a slave to the telephone and your prospect list.
